Just around the corner in the Netherlands and definitely worth a visit: Maastricht. We’ll show you beautiful routes through the city, repurposed churches, an exciting hangout for students and others, the old harbor, pubs, a very unique bakery, and much more. We’ll tell you about the interesting things to discover outside the city.
You’ll need to make your own way to Maastricht. There are three ways to get there by public transit:
- by bike: along with the Freewalking Tour, there’s a Freebiking Tour. If you’d like to join, take the train and your bike to Maastricht in the morning, participate in the tour, and then return to Aachen on a guided bike tour. This trip takes about 4 hours and is absolutely worth it—it mainly takes you off the main roads, partly along the river and past a few castles. There are some hills—so if in doubt, we recommend an e-bike.
- without a bike, take the bus to Maastricht and back. Buses leave every 20 minutes or so from the main train station or, even better, from Elisenbrunnen. A day pass costs 11 euros.
- or take the train to Maastricht and back without a bike. For this, it’s best to buy a Euregio ticket. It costs 23 euros and is valid for two people on weekends. Check beforehand to see if the train is running—it’s often canceled. But if it is, you can always take the bus on the spot—it also departs from the train station.
The Freewalking tour starts at 10 a.m. in front of the train station in Maastricht (so you’ll need to leave Aachen around 8:30 a.m.) and lasts about 3 hours.
